IT SEEMS like no time at all to its members, but Stourbridge-based Crystal Bowls Club has now been going 21 years, as founder David Merrick tells us: “The club was formed in 1995 from a very small beginning.

The late Eddie Palmer was employed at the Stourbridge indoor leisure centre teaching short mat bowls, and as a result of the interest shown, two separate clubs emerged; Crystal Bowls Club being one of them.

“Dudley MBC provided an outdoor area previously utilised for grass court tennis, and this was converted into a six rink outdoor green, in a pleasantly situated walled garden at Stevens Park in Wollescote.

“Progressively the green was improved, culminating in a the green being approved for county and national competition.

In the past the club predominantly played friendly matches, mostly away, but with improved facilities the club is moving towards more home matches.

2004 saw Crystal enter its first league competition, the Worcester Five Rink League.

“In a strong, predominantly crown green area, the club is pleased to be able to hold its membership to above fiftyplus members.

“We also have coaching classes open to all who want to learn how to play. We meet at the green on Stevens Park, Wollescote, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. If you’d like to join us, call 0121 501 2431.”
