BACK in our February 27 edition we featured two photographs of local bowls teams, one of which was Netherton Conservative Club.

That picture dated from 1949, and it caught the eye of Netherton reader Dave Southall, beacuase it brought to mind a photograph he has in his possession, which he has kindly loaned to us.

Dave's picture is another from Netherton Conservative Club, but this dates from just over twenty years earlier, in 1928.

"Bearing in mind the date, some of these gentlemen could well have been the fathers of some of the men in the 1949 photograph," Dave points out.

Given their smartness of attire (and the fact that this was a Conservative Club) many of them would have been local businessmen – and note that they appear to be wearing their work shoes. No specialised flat bowling shoes in those days.

In the photo from the 27 February edition, the chap on the back row, third from left, was Sid Howells, Dave added. His father, a groundsman, is on the front row of this picture, third from left.

They must have been quite a team. The board in front of them reads: West Midland Cons Bowling League. Winners, Netherton Cons Club, 1928.
