Wolverhampton theatre shook when Bill Haley and Comets played

RE the letter from Robert Hale in The Bugle (March 20 edition). I saw Louis Armstrong at the Roller Rink in Bearwood. I cannot remember the date but it was the year after the film High Society went out on release.

His supporting musicians were the same as the cast of the film. I don't remember the one-legged tap dancer but I have a faint memory of a female vocalist and I am almost certain it was Ella Fitzgerald.

I also saw Stan Kenton at the Civic and one or two other bands but the names escape me.

The Gaumont Cinema was used as a venue for concerts and a number of up and coming groups including the Beatles played there.

I can vaguely remember the Walker Brothers and Dave, Dee, Dozey, Beaky, Mick and Titch. The highlight was Bill Haley and his Comets. I was in the circle and it shook in time to the beat when the music really got going.

Another venue was the Park Hall Hotel. The manager at that time was Dennis Fuller, who sadly passed away recently, who organised cabaret nights and we had Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdink and Sandie Shaw to name a few before they became famous.

Regards.

Wolverhampton.
