West Bromwich Church was moved brick by brick in 1881

I READ with interest your article in The Bugle (March 13 edition) entitled Great War letters found in grandparents' Bible.

The Bible was a special gift to Eli and Sarah Jane Woodcock on their wedding at St Paul's Church, Gold's Hill, West Bromwich, they being the first couple to be married there. The date was August 7, 1887. This I'm sure is correct, but St Paul's Church building has an interestingly curious history, and might even be unique.

I have received information from a good friend of mine Mrs Pauline Stevens, the present church treasurer and long standing member of St Paul's Gold's Hill. Apparently this church building did not begin its life in Gold's Hill but in Cappon Fields, an area in Bilston, and was moved brick by brick to its present position in 1881/82.

It was originally built by 1855, and if it had been previously licensed for marriages, it might have had weddings in its original position.

David T Worley.
