Sir Bobby Robson did infact once manage a team in our region - besides playing with great distinction for West Bromwich Albion of course.
Plain Bobby Robson (he wasn't a Knight then) occupied ther hot seat of a Cannock junior side back in the early 60's - as the above photograph proves. It could be said that Mr Robson cut his managerial teeth on the Cannock Chase coalfield - which must have seemed like a true home-from-home for this County Durham lad.
The team shown is West Cannock Youth Club from Hednesford, circa 1962 (just before Bobby left Albion to rejoin Fulham). He coached the side whilst still a player at The Hawthorns.
A strange coincidence is that the young mascot on the picture, Paul Cooper,(later the Blues goal-keeper) played for Bobby Robson when he managed the successful Ipswich Town side which beat Arsenal at Wembley in the FA Cup Final in 1978. Little could they have known how their paths would cross in such a significant fashion all those years later.
