BUGLE readers will know that The Longest Day was a 1960's film made about the D-Day landings and was directed by Darryl F. Zanuck.

But I wonder how many will know that among all the famous actors of the day was Walsall-born Richard Wattis.

He had a bit part in the film and he plays a paratrooper landing in the spider's web of the German High Command in Northern France in a square, where he is confronted by a German elite officer and says very calmly: "Sorry old man but I seem to have landed here by accident…" :

Elizabeth & Ian Payne.
