OUR thanks go to Dudley reader Julia Bullock for loaning us this lovely old photograph.
You wouldn't think it to look at them, but according to the printed caption on the picture's mounting board, these were the men of Dudley Junior Conservative Club. And the trophy they are shown with was won when they topped the Wolverhampton and District Conservative Clubs Billiards League Division I, in 1925/26.
The men lined up as follows. Starting from left in the back row:
H.W. Hughes (president); W.G. Darby; G.W. Goodreds (secretary); J.E. Timmins; D.W. Jones; R.L. Goodreds.
Front row: W. Howles; J. Johnson; S.E. Wooldridge; A.J. Raybould (captain); A. Whale.
Julia tells us that her father James William Johnson, and his father before him, with the same name, were both members of the Dudley club. Given the date of 1926, it seems most likely that the J. Johnson in the picture, second from left in the front row, was Julia's grandfather.
