I ENCLOSE my tribute to Bert Williams, a 'genuine' legend. Bert was one of the greatest goalkeepers ever and a star in that wonderful Wolves 1950s team. Bert, a brilliant player, was also a very nice man off the field.
"Saved Bert!" the Molineux faithful roared
As high across the goal Bert Williams soared,
An alert 'goalie' always safe and steady
Superb agility, hands always ready.
Acrobatic leaps - sublime skills
His athleticism bringing many thrills,
He was Wolves and England 'keeper' supreme
A star of Wolves wonder 1950's team.
He was superbly fit, had style and grace
He played the game with a smile on his face,
He was fearless, so very brave
He pulled off many a brilliant save.
With shot or header he was hard to beat
With courageous dives at forward's feet.
Upon his Black Country roots he did not frown
He was proud of his birthplace - Bradley Town.
Off the field, easy going, gentle and kind
A real gentleman - these days hard to find.
The term 'legend' is widely used
In many cases a term often abused.
Bert in his time caused no strife
A genuine 'legend' in his happy life.
Bert Williams gone to a well earned rest
In his wonderful life he really impressed,
We'll never forget his brave endeavour
His loyalty to Wolves his legacy for ever!
