I WOULD like to congratulate John Workman for the excellent article and pictures on the battle to save Woden's window (The Bugle, December 5 edition).
As one of the churchwardens at St. Bart's, Wednesbury, and responsible with others, for fund-raising, the publicity which your article has given to our plight is most welcome and much appreciated.
It is very difficult to alert the public to the urgent need for cash to help maintain and repair the building, and as St. Bart's has been the focal point of the town for so many centuries, I suspect that people take its continued existence for granted.
Therefore, any publicity such as that which you have given us, can only be for the good.
We had a successful Christmas Fayre on Saturday, December 7, raising just over £400 for the church restoration fund, and we were helped in that by the very kind gesture of Ian Bott, who donated all of his takings from his table top to our funds.
We will be arranging further fund raising events in 2014, and beyond.
On the matter of the window itself, I can tell readers that I have just received the report from the church architect, and we are now awaiting some quotations from stonemasons before we can go to the next stage - calculating how much we actually need, although earlier estimates indicated a figure in the region of £8,000 to £10,000.
Thank you once again. Kind regards,
