Australian reader's memories of racing at Prees Heath

RE the article by Dan Shaw on Prees Heath Race Track and Tony Groucutt in The Bugle (January 3, 2013 edition).

I enjoyed reading about Tony when he raced at Prees Heath in the early 1960s. At that time I was the secretary of the Cheshire Motorcycle Road Racing Club and we had been given permission to use Prees Heath for motorcycle racing. Off a group of us went to Prees Heath armed with large yard brushes, shovels, spades – anything that would clean the track. When we arrived we were confronted by an overgrown track covered with weeks, gravel, broken rocks etc.

The weather was glorious, sunny and we were young with not much common sense. We didn't realise the task that was before us.

We spent two days sweeping and cleaning off gravel from the surface to prepare for a race meeting which was duly held.

I organised a few meetings at Prees Heath, in addition to others at Oulton Park, Cadwell Park. I wonder if Tony Groucutt was one of the competitors in races I organised so long ago.

Best wishes from Melbourne Australia.
