HERE we have another snippet of sports news from the works magazine of John Thompson's works of Peartree Lane, Dudley, loaned to us recently by reader Mary Woodhall.
Dating from the late 1960s, it shows apprentice engineer Michael Potts of Shaw Road in Bushbury, Wolverhampton, meeting the Minister for Sport, Dennis Howell. Michael was something of a swimming phenomenon, winning two cups and a medal at a national swimming event. He represented the Midlands in the mixed and freestyle relay teams (who won both) and won the individual medley and senior diving categories on his own. The medley was a handicap race which saw Michael start 37 seconds behind the first man; who he caught and overtook within 112 yards.
